Mate, what can I say? Without listening to thism it's already a shining star, top ever tracklist with two of my very special favs: my very best Joe Sample with In All My Wildest Dreams? Wow! How did you pick that song? Since this is a jazzfunk set I assume this is the original, I love the new version as well from the "Sample This!" album. The other fav is the last track, Mellow, mellow, just came across the cover version the other day in a trip hop mix, Massive Attack covered it.
Billy Paul is brilliant, the same atmosphere as in Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues, but even more mellow, ah, I like itl Patrick Rushen and Isley Brothers are really chill tracks - you just created a new genre here, the jazzfunk chillout!
Sample is the new one, love Marcus Miller on the bass! God bless George Duke for producing this album, all time best for me. This is such a cool, lovely tune, great fender rhodes piano sound and the unmistakable style or Mr. Sample - does not get any better!
Both Pieces of a Dream and Bar-Keys were a surprise and a highlight for me, especially Bar-Keys, love the funky EW&F kind sound.
And then comes Professor Byrd! Still having big holes with his biography, I don't know where this is from, but it's funky as it should be.
Then aaaah! Surprise again, Track 10, where do I know this from? Such a funky mellow stuff, mindblowing. Thanks for reminding me of this (although I'm pretty sure someone sampled of covered this - quick look at whosampled.com tells me that "Hip-Hop Hooray" had that bleep sound sampled (well, I picked that) and Notorious B.I.G. got the whole tune sampled in his "Get Money" - awesome - it's still more possible that I heard it on a Jazzanova Blue Note compilation)
Lowrell - nothing can beat this funky bass, it's mindblowing! Sunnies ever happy tune. I actually don't like the lyrics, I always wished I had a fully instrumental version - it's still good to beat juggle with it on two turntables and extend it.
Like I said, nothing can beat the original, however try this cover version, quite a nice loungey track:
