I listened to this on a Sunday afternoon in the end, not on Friday night - probably even a better fit!
The beginning can be a bit too heavy for some, hope it did not frightened many away - I mean the tracks like Jaws, Peacemaker, Shake It Well, quite serious jazzfunk tunes. Some well known popular songs balance it out, Hollywood Swinging is always great and of course the evergreen Jamaica Funk, never enough of that phat bassline.
What's the T is refreshing from Virgin Ubiquiity - there was a remix album released for most of those Roy Ayers songs, quite nice deep funk house remixes.
Then you almost fooled me at Track 9 - I knew I heard the "remix" before and I did not know it was sampling a 70s jazzfunk hit! Nice new discovery of an original - I thought - and I quickly identified that it was on one of the EARTH complilations, maybe 2 or 3. Then I look at your tracklist - it's Makoto, so it's the one from EARTH itself! Nice association playing Good Lookin' label tunes next to 70s funk!
That's when the real fun starts as you go on your typical journey of showing where the original jazzfunk has evolved - I loved Atlantic Starr, awesome arrangement even if the lyrics are outdated a bit - the tracks I knew from them were always a bit too cheesy but I need to dig deeper and find some funky tunes like this! Bit of a Driza Bone feel for me of spring and summer vibes...
I knew this Michael Wycoff song probably from the "Sampled" series as the original for Zhane's "Hey Mr. DJ".
LA Boppers sounded like "That's The Way Of The World" from EWF, shockingly similar bassline! Dropping Gerald Albright, a bit of a smooth jazz was a nice touch just like Down To The Bone later - whilst you have People's Chioce, I only really know "Party Is a Groovy Thing" and then JB with Payback - what a classic great tune! Reminded me one time back in late 1990s when this was playing in the radio when I was on a holiday in Greece, I was lying on the beach in Corfu, Paleokastritsa and enjoyed the laidback feeling while the same long version was playing. Great memories!
LOTW - yeah, need more of this, with my man Bluey from Incognito :-)
Now that is what's really called lounge - great Sunday Session for me, thank you!
I'll leave it until this Friday evening for another great party like the first "On Air" that I listened to last week. Maybe I'll cook duck again, goes well with jazzfunk! Worked pretty well at least last time...
